A number of young people from West Cornwall have had the experience of a lifetime this October, attending sailing residentials with Hayle Youth Project. The Hayle based charity, which is celebrating its 20th year of supporting the young people of West Cornwall this year, has offered two sailing trips this October through Falmouth based ‘Sea Sanctuary’, aboard their vessel Firedancer, made possible by funding from the West Cornwall Youth Trust. Dai Lawton from the charity said: "Cornwall is surrounded by sea but many young people in the county don’t get the chance to enjoy it. We put on these trips to give young people an opportunity that they otherwise wouldn’t have to engage with their environment, learn new skills, meet new people and have a lot of fun! We were really lucky with both trips as the conditions were perfect for sailing, it’s been a really valuable experience for everyone that took part."

This year Hayle Youth Project embarked on a journey to make The Summer of a Life Time Experience for local disadvantaged young people. Hayle Youth Project would like to say thank you to the ASDA Foundation for helping them achieve their goal. The summer holidays can be hard for young people in Cornwall because deprivation, making it difficult for families and adding pressure. This year Hayle Youth Project did a three-week summer activity programme which consisted of 10 different activities catering for everyone! These activities included surfing, forest school, DJ workshop, sports sessions, art and drama workshops, street dance and even a graffiti workshop! ASDA donated Hayle Youth Project £455 to help contribute towards the cost of the summer activity programme which allowed HYP to offer their activity programme to families for FREE! Hayle Youth Project also received funding from a scheme called ‘Filling the Gap’ which meant they were able to offer nutritious meals as part of their activity programme. This scheme helped Hayle Youth Project provide over 150 meals for local young people and families. This summer was a great success for Hayle Youth Project and they hope to make it bigger and better next year.

Hayle Youth Project has recently been on a four night sailing residential. Everyone who went had a truly amazing experience. They went fishing, played games and worked hard as a team. The group were taken out of their comfort zones and challenged in many ways. Everyone learnt new skills and each person took away something from this experience. They made new friends, gained confidence and rose to challenges. They all learned about cooperation and communication in order to work as a team. This really was a truly amazing experience for all.

Hayle Youth Project has been working closely with the Tate Gallery throughout the summer term. The young people have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the project. There were many sessions where the Tate worked alongside Hayle Youth Project to produce some amazing art pieces which were exhibited at Porthmeor Studios. The young people really enjoyed seeing all their work on display. They were all so proud of what they have created. They loved experimenting with different materials and exploring alternative ways to produce art pieces.

She said: "We are absolutely delighted to have been awarded this grant from the Big Lottery Fund's Reaching Communities programme. "It means we can expand our much needed services and continue to work with local young people." Hayle Youth Project was set up in 1999 and has evolved from running from a small shop to now working with more than 200 young people a year from their purpose built well-resourced youth centre. It offers five diverse programmes which range from one-to-one mentoring to a holiday activities programme.
